Legal Fees

You need clarity and predictability when it comes to legal fees in order that you can manage the legal costs of your business. We offer you that and also a deliberately commercial and competitive approach to our legal fees.

We have several legal fee structures that we can offer:

  • competitive hourly rates, or
  • fixed fees (for suitable items of work), or
  • capped fees (for some transactions).

Our hourly rate is £300 plus VAT at 20%.

Where the complexity of the matter requires additional expertise, we reserve the right to charge a higher rate which will be quoted to you before commencing work.

The hourly rate may be reduced in a situation where the frequency of instructions warrants a reduced fee.

We do not take instructions for litigation matters or disputes which have been referred to an Employment Appeals Tribunal.

Any additional charges will be set out in our Letter of Engagement with details of the appropriate rate to be charged.

Where disbursement costs are incurred, these will be notified to you in advance and charged at cost plus VAT at the applicable rate in each case. (Please note that although most such disbursements attract VAT at 20% ,some are exempt or attract VAT at Nil%).

Employment Settlement Agreements : if you are an employee and your employer has offered you a draft settlement agreement setting out the formal terms on which you will leave your job ( this may be in the context of redundancy) you will need to have this reviewed and to finalise the agreement you will need a formal adviser’s certificate confirming you have received the required independent advice. You can instruct us to undertake this review, and (if you wish to conclude the agreement) to provide the adviser’s certificate. Our fees for doing this will be your responsibility, but usually your employer will offer to make a contribution towards your costs on condition that the agreement is concluded.

We offer a fixed fee for an Employment Settlement Review. This fixed fee includes the following:

  • reading the draft Settlement Agreement and taking your initial instructions (about your role and the circumstances for the agreement),
  • an online meeting with you (up to 90 minutes) to advise you about the draft Settlement Agreement,
  • if following the online meeting you wish to sign the agreement, we will provide the Adviser’s certificate at no extra charge.

The fixed fee will depend on the seniority of the role you are leaving, and we have set these out in bands below, which assume that the draft agreement reflects the normal level of complexity for each level:

Junior role: £500 + VAT at 20%
Mid level role: £750+ VAT at 20%
Senior level role: £1000 + VAT at 20%

If you need additional work and advice, such as further negotiation and amendment of the draft settlement agreement, or advice on related issues such as shareholdings /director appointments or detailed advice on post termination restrictions that additional work will be charged at our hourly rate ( £300+ VAT at 20%).

Usually, the employer pays their contribution directly to us, but if for any reason that contribution is not paid by your employer or not sufficient to cover your total costs, you will continue to be liable for our fees and costs incurred.

Our rates are always competitive, and our monthly invoicing means that you always know ‘where you are’ in relation to your legal fees.

We use an online case management system which allows us to track the cost of your matter as we go, so we can keep you up to date as a matter progresses.
